I walk with Ezebel Misabi to the Waterfall, which has now become my favorite location on this enormous campus.I find along the walk that I am able to be as honest as I wish with Ezebel. She tends to take things seriously, and she clearly prefers serious conversation. I learn a few things about her that I never knew.

I finally ask her the question. “How are you dealing with Angi’s death?”

She takes a long breath in before answering. “It was a shock, I’ll admit.”

“What do you think happened?” I ask. “With Angi, I mean.”

I am waiting for the obvious, for Ezebel to tell me that they never should have been using that ladder, to find out how much internalized guilt she’s built up and determine how that will affect her performance.

But instead she shocks me. Her words come with iron, and a measure of anger.

“You saw Angi cartwheel down that wire at talent night. Do you truly believe she simply slipped off the ladder?”
