I invite Muli for a talk. He wants a sparring match with cane staves.

Seven years separate us in age, and he’s learned his staves well. But I happen to be an Assembly staves champion.

So when it’s clear that he intends to throw off any rules and take the staves to me, I counter with everything I’ve got. It feels great. By that I mean it hurt like hell, because Muli is not one to ever take lightly, and he punishes me. I punish him back.

We end up both stretched out on the prep platform, exhausted and in need of medical attention.

“You done?” I ask.

“I’m never done,” says Muli. “I hope you’re the same.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean the Assembly doesn’t get to fire you. You got that?”

I get what he’s saying, and a wave of both relief and joy fight over me. Whatever might happen, I was a true coach.
